Central Valley Stonewall Democratic Club Announces Stanislaus Chapter The Central Valley Stonewall Democratic Club is pleased to announce the formation of a Stanislaus satellite chapter to help promote the following goals:

• Champion equality.
• Support LGBT and LGBT-allied candidates run for public office.
• Help foster a sense of community among LGBT people.

With Central Valley Stonewall Democratic Club (CVSDC) founding member and Stockton City Councilmember Susan Eggman in attendance, members of the Stanislaus County LGBT community have formed an affiliated chapter of the San Joaquin County based organization. Eggman proclaimed, “I am proud to be a part of the Stanislaus LGBT community coming together. These individuals are putting the fight for their constitutional rights as American citizens into their own hands. The club will support local candidates from school boards to judgeships so that LGBT and LGBT-allied voices are represented in all levels of governance.”

Martina Virrey, President of CVSDC shares Eggman’s enthusiasm, “Stanislaus County and Modesto has one of the largest LGBT communities, per capita, in our nation and it is courageous of them to stand up and be heard in such a conservative area. We credit their determination to the 2008 elections and the unfortunate passing of Proposition 8 by 67 percent of voters in Stanislaus County.”  Virrey concludes, “Just like founding Stonewall member Councilmember Eggman and her peers in San Joaquin County, these new members of the Stanislaus Stonewall Club will be a loud and effective voice for equality”.

Sabrina Kola, one of Stanislaus Stonewall’s new members shares, “The Modesto area has a wonderful Pride Center and awesome social clubs and outlets for its LGBT community. This organization will provide a much needed LGBT political presence out here”. The Stanislaus Stonewall Democratic Club will meet the second Sunday of each month at 1125 Kansas Avenue (CLC Meeting Room), Modesto, CA at 2 pm. Today is Primary Day in California. A lot of attention has been paid to the former Tech CEO’s gunning for the Republican nomination for the big seats and to Gavin Newsom’s off-again on-again campaign but somewhere in there the fact that the Birther Queen, Miss Orly Taitz, is running for Secretary of State got lost. Not only that she might just pull it off:

A possible Taitz victory would work like this.

Republican voters, brought out in sizable numbers by the contested primaries for governor and U.S. senator, fill out the rest of their ballot with progressively less information about their candidates. They know Taitz’s name from… somewhere. And she’s listed first on the ballot, thanks to the state’s randomized ranking system. (Some of these voters, of course, will know and avidly support her.) She’s identified on the ballot as an attorney, while Dunn is a real estate agent. They check off her name, and she wins.

Dunn can pull this off, despite running a fairly low-key campaign. For all we know, he could win by 30 points — nobody polls these races. But it’s not unheard of for a low-visibility office like this to go to the candidate with a little name recognition and the first place on the ballot. Cue: Potential PR disaster and a talking point Democrats could use until the end of time.

Tropical Storm Agatha swept across Central America yesterday, bringing torrential rain that killed more than 100 people and opened a 60m-deep sinkhole in Guatemala City which reportedly swallowed up a three-storey building.

The 30m-diameter sinkhole opened up in a northern district of Guatemala City, with residents blaming the rains and substandard drainage systems. Local reports said one man was killed when the building was swallowed. In 2007, three people died when a similar sinkhole appeared in the same area.
